Knitting

I love to knit (we all do, my mom, my sister and I). My sister really only likes knitting (well, weaving and lace making too, a bit), but my mom and I like to sew as well. Mom makes lace and crochets as well. And we like weaving too.
It's a little difficult to explain to someone who doesn't like knitting, what's so fun about it. Somehow, it's just so peaceful and rewarding. Another way of expressing oneself creatively.

We like to make up our own patterns, or search in old books and magazines, but we also like to go shopping in ordinary shops. Have you ever considered how nice it is to browse through a shop that sells yarn and knitting needles? There's a pleasant, cosy smell in there, and the atmosphere is calm and relaxing. You feel as if you could stand around pondering what to knit this time.

Once or twice we've dyed our own yarn, using plant dyes. You do that mostly with wool. A slight problem is that it's difficult to get several colours. The more common ones are browns, beiges, yellowish-green and yellow (in various shades, mainly - you guessed it - brownish or beigish, if there is such a word). If you want red, blue, bluish green or purple, it's much more difficult.

Right now I'm working on a shawl, and I found the pattern for that in an old book, that belonged to my grandmother. 'The Housewife's Needlework Book' (my translation). It was published in the 1920's and cost about the equivalent of a US dollar. The pattern was called 'peacock knitting'.
